PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS AND SOFTWARES FOR THE PURPOSE

INTRODUCTION

Pipe Stress Analysis refers to Process of identifying, analysing stresses that are induced in a pipe or members in a piping system which is subjected to either thermal stresses or mechanical stresses. Stresses induced in the pipes might come due to several origins. This may include loads on the pipe, bolting, thermal gradients, pressure exerted on the pipes by flowing fluids, thermal transients etc. There are some systems which are highly sensitive to external loads. This brings the necessity of Pipe Stress Analysis. To keep a system in good and working state, all these stresses induced in the pipes are to be thoroughly analysed along with their predicted outcomes.

SOFTWARES FOR PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS

Gone are the days when stresses induced in the pipes were calculated by noting force components and subsequent calculation of stresses. In this era of digitalization, there are several softwares which ease up this process of calculating all stresses induced in the pipes. Designer needs to input the model of piping system. He must provide all required parameters after which softwares can do calculations on their own.

Based on the Pipe Stress Analysis and Softwares used for the same, following are some of the softwares that engineers use for the purpose:

  • CAESAR II:

It is mostly used pipe flexibility and stress analysis software but users complain regarding its lack of user friendly interface. CAESAR II provides users with a thorough analysis. It is with regards to piping system or network that is subjected to a wide variety of loads by taking several parameters of each pipe into consideration.

 

The parameters include weights of the pipes, pressure, thermal conditions and other dynamic values. The calculations are carried out on industry based guidelines. The software is said to have a two way link with CAD softwares and design remains in-tact during analysis.

  • AUTOPIPE:

Prepared by Bentley systems, AutoPIPE is one of the most user-friendly softwares that engineers across the world use for several stresses induced in the pipes. The software is relatively new in the industry. But it has already consolidated its huge fan base through its great features and applications.

 

AutoPIPE software has advanced analysis techniques which when applied can be used to increase the productivity of plant. The software supports integration to notable softwares used for design. This includes OpenPlant, AutoPLANT, PlantSpace, Aveva PDMS and many more which helps in time saving and error reduction.

  • CAEPIPE:

CAEPIPE claims of a faster processing speed which helps engineers to handle more number of projects simultaneously. Analysis made using CAEPIPE software is fast and easier. It can help to reduce the overall costs as well. CAEPIPE can be used to analyse effects of weights, pressures, earthquakes, temperature changes and harmonic loads on a piping system. The software can import/export data from similar programs and is available for MS Windows (32  & 64 bit).

CONCLUSION

When stresses induced in the pipes are known, all the necessary steps can be taken by engineers to check that the stresses do not exceed limits and functioning of the plants is not hindered.
